i've got 'em.

my brother is rolling into town on thursday.  this can only be a good thing.  it is to celebrate st. hulver's day aka my son's birthday.  we'll drink beer, take pictures and generally chill.  the dude is always entertained by his uncle so i anticipate naught but the best.

we're having some family and friends over to celebrate the day in style.  and that style is with cupcakes, beverages, ice cream and hot dogs (or veggie dogs for the vegetarian/vegan crowds and brats for those of us who know better!).  to prepare for this, we did some serious yard work saturday.  my dad took the dude for the day and stacky and i were able to get some things done.  the sun stayed hidden and there was some sprinkling (which was great except when i went to install the new porch light...no funny dances from me!) so it kept the heat in line with personal tolerances.

we even got to hit REI for helmets.  that was fun.  i explained to the salesdude that the wife and i were raised in the 70's.  that means that anyone who wears a helmet is a nerd.  how do we get one that fits, etc.  he was really helpful and we got us some brainbuckets.  we do have to wear them in state parks and we want to model good behavior for the dude.  besides, he gets so stoked over his that it's hard not to want one for myself.  it was good fun.

the only downer of saturday was that the dude didn't nap enough with grandpa.  he needs to spend more time over at their place so he'll be more comfortable.  we'll work on that.  but damn, i paid for it sunday.  stacky went out to shop for party stuff and housewares and i hung out with the dude.  he was in a really, really foul mood.  he needed to sleep, but refused.  it really does wear on a man's patience.  we finished sunday with some homemade pizza and opening presents with stacky's parents (her mom will be out of town on his actual birthday).  the gift of the day was a big ass bag of duplos!  i'll have a million holes in my feet in no time!  he really did enjoy them and i think we're in for a whole new era of creative play.  the kid is nuts.

to rewind a bit, i did get my djembe.  and it is awesome.  there's a lot of tone in that bad boy and i really enjoy playing at it.  i pretend to play a lot of instruments and i have a helluva lot of fun.  the dude enjoys the drum too.  i should really get him one for his birthday so we can jam.  he was beating on a cardboard box last night and looking so proud.  but don't worry, i'll get him started on a proper instrument soon enough.  can't have more percussionists in the family than we already do.  barbarians!

plans.  we're planning our garden.  it's really f'd up that we can plant stuff in the fall here.  i'm still not over the climate.  but there's gonna be some hella sweet squash and other tasty treats coming up soon.  i hope i don't have to sacrifice a vacation day to putting in the garden, but i'll do what i must!  back to the land, yo!

more recording tonight.  i've been struggling with a tune for more than 6 weeks now and i finally got to the root of the problem.  it'll be wrapped up before thursday, methinks.  it's nice to know what needs to be done...it makes the doing far simpler.

no cycling this weekend.  sigh.  the weather was perfect for it.  the dude was not.  'tis the way of things.

i'm sure that i had more to say, but i'm running low on time.  lots to do.  too much, in fact.

Kids affect your memory worse than drugs by georgeha (4.00 / 1) #1 Mon Aug 18, 2008 at 09:53:15 AM EST
I don't remember if it was twelve year old, seven year old or just stories about me as a baby, but I think it was twelve year old. We cut our her afternoon naps around a year and a half because she would be up too late otherwise. It made life more enjoyable when she'd be up all day, then in bed at 8.

we're hella lucky... by clock (2.00 / 0) #2 Mon Aug 18, 2008 at 09:55:58 AM EST
...he's in bed and asleep just before 8 on most nights.  but after a day with no nap, the next day was trudging from one nap to the next completely unwilling to give in to sleep.  fast forward 12 years and i won't be able to get him out of bed before noon i'm sure.

You are lucky by theboz (4.00 / 1) #4 Mon Aug 18, 2008 at 11:12:43 AM EST
My wife and I still talk about how amazed we are by your son's sleeping habits.  My daughter has been getting later and later, which makes me later and later to work every day.  Now I'm about an hour late on average to work.

i have to wake him up every morning by StackyMcRacky (4.00 / 1) #12 Mon Aug 18, 2008 at 12:44:42 PM EST
he wants to sleep in until 7 or so, but it's too hot outside to walk the dog any later than 7:30 (and if i don't walk the dog, Bad Things happen).  I wake him up at 6:30 every morning.  He's usually ready for a nap around 8:30 - sometimes just 30 minutes, other times 2 hours.  He still goes down for at least 1 hour every afternoon at 2.

we are SO lucky!

Squash in an arid, incredibly hot climate by debacle (4.00 / 2) #3 Mon Aug 18, 2008 at 10:30:12 AM EST

It's not arid by theboz (2.00 / 0) #5 Mon Aug 18, 2008 at 11:14:21 AM EST
It's more like the jungle here.  Think incredibly hot and incredibly humid.  However, that does change in the fall, and the weather cools down which is why you can get another planting season in.

never been to houston, eh? by clock (4.00 / 1) #6 Mon Aug 18, 2008 at 11:18:17 AM EST
an average of 70% humidity does not an arid climate make.  most days i think i need gills.

It's ok for you to come here by theboz (2.00 / 0) #11 Mon Aug 18, 2008 at 12:35:36 PM EST
We also have some of the best hospitals in the U.S. and I think one of the best if not the best cancer treatment centers in the world.  Whether that is related to our weather and the amount of pollution we have is undetermined.

not so true about the cancer hospital by StackyMcRacky (4.00 / 1) #13 Mon Aug 18, 2008 at 12:47:50 PM EST
it has really gone downhill.  I'm told you DO NOT want to go there, unless you have no other hope and can get into an experimental program.

I learned this from a bunch of nurses (one was a pediatric oncologist) when my friend was diagnosed with breast cancer.  I was really shocked when I found out because it had always been the best in the world.  It seems they're marketing based on the name now.

Quite sad.

That sucks by theboz (2.00 / 0) #14 Mon Aug 18, 2008 at 01:29:27 PM EST
Hopefully I never have a need for that place.  Where is better?

it all depends on the kind of cancer by StackyMcRacky (2.00 / 0) #15 Mon Aug 18, 2008 at 01:39:44 PM EST
since my questions were about breast cancer, I learned that the Breast Center at Methodist Hospital is the absolute best place in Houston for bc issues.

It's hard to keep track of the various Texan HuSiite's locations.
